Gutter Pitch Per Foot
Working out gutter slope as a general rule gutter slope is set at 1 4 inch per 10 feet of guttering.
Gutter pitch per foot. You can measure pitch with a 2 foot level and a tape measure. Gutters need to be pitched at a 5 degree angle. As with gutters a downspout s capacity must match or exceed the expected runoff. A 5 inch gap for instance is a 5 in 12 pitch.
All guttering must slope toward the nearest downspout. The above recommendations assume that you have properly sized downspouts every 40 feet. For example for every 10 feet of gutter they need to drop 1 2 inch from the high end to the downspout. This means the downspout end of the gutter should be set 3 4 of an inch lower than the other end.
For especially long gutter runs of 40 feet or more the slope or pitch should start in the middle diverting the water to a downspout at each end. Increasing the pitch increases a gutter s handling capacity but the gutter may look askew over a long run. Hold one end of the level against the roof level it and then measure the distance between the roof and the underside of the level at its midpoint which gives you a 12 inch run. Increasing the pitch increases a gutter s handling capacity but the gutter may look askew over a long run.
This allows the water to flow gently but. So if you have a 25 foot section of guttering you should set the downspout end of the gutter 5 8 of an inch lower 1 4 x 2 5 5 8 than the other end. The standard is about inch per 10 feet. This gentle incline will ensure that water stays flowing and it will help sweep any debris in the gutters toward the downspout.
Gutter can be run level for appearance but addition downspout will be necessary see section on proper gutter and downspout sizing. For example if you have 30 feet of guttering the calculation is 1 4 x 3 0 75 i e. The incline should be approximately one inch for every sixteen feet. Gutters should be placed below the extended roof line so that snow and ice can slide clear.
Steeper pitches require less clearance. Most contractors tend to set the slop at one quarter inch per ten feet of guttering. To ensure the adequate drainage your gutters should be pitched approximately inch per 10 feet. Gutter should be pitched 1 16 or greater per foot for proper drainage.
This brings up another important rule to keep in mind.
